How to Recognize Self Improvement Bad Ideas and Avoid Its Consequences
Good ideas or bad ideas were actually labels given by us. What is implied by good or bad was outcome. If the ideas work and yield desired outcome, it is a good idea. Likewise, if it does not bring about the expected outcome, it is a bad idea.
If we planned to get the best possible outcome, it becomes a priority to work with the best idea. One of the ways to do this is by recognizing what a bad idea looks like so you can dismiss it upfront.
But recognizing bad ideas is not simple because bad ideas can be deceiving especially when it comes from the so called experts, at the right time and seems to be the most logical things to do. After you took the advice, you find that there is no improvement or worst, you are falling back.
So how can you tell whether your self improvement ideas are not sound ideas?
I list some of the common symptoms:
Let us look a bit deeper.
Many experts self improvement ideas are redundant. This is becoming more rampant. The internet aggravates the problem even more. Nowadays, all I can tell you is, if I've seen one, I've seen them all.
Trying to improve oneself based on such redundant ideas is a bad idea. The result is always below expectation. Everywhere people demand new ideas. They want to hear something new. Not the same 'old song'.
Same thing with incongruence.
I remember not too long ago, I was in a room listening to a motivational talk. It was the company's quarterly meeting and the speaker talked about staying motivated as sales representative.
The speaker seemed to have his background in direct selling or car dealership because he made reference mostly to these fields. He talked enthusiastically during those two hours.
Guess what the audiences were doing?
They were busying themselves day dreaming or scribbling on the papers. Nobody was paying attention!
Why? Simply because we could not connect to the message. Even though the idea was there and the speaker tried very hard to get it across but the idea was disconnected. The room was full with sales people selling Pharmaceutical products not diaries or cars.
It was a bad idea to ask direct sales expert motivate Pharmaceutical sales people. It was incongruent and irrelevant.
When the idea is too broad, the impact is diluted and becomes a bad idea. For example, anytime one of us suffers from depression, we immediately resolve to use pill. We think it will work and it will work fast.
What if that someone is hypersensitive to the pill's ingredient?
If that was the case, not only we have to deal with a depress person but now we have to deal with a depress and a very sick person. Not a good combination I might add. All because of our broad notion or idea of treating depression immediately with medication.
Bad ideas do not necessarily mean 'bad'. What they really mean is they are not working. When it comes to self improvement, we want ideas that work. That goes without saying that we must 'work' to make the ideas work.
